  SIM Copter
Posted by: SpookyZalost - 09-10-2021, 04:41 AM - Forum: Retrogaming - No Replies

It's about time to talk about one of the first 3D commercial titles produced by MAXIS, SIM Copter.

SIM Copter was originally released in the mid 1990's and used Simcity 2000 Cities as game maps allowing you to load up your cities and fly around in them, this would later be used in Streets of Simcity as well which shared the same game engine.

Unfortunately while the original game is a challenge to get working on modern PC's, primarily because modern CPU's are too fast... there is an updated game engine that can play it called SIM Copter X!

http://alekasm.com/scx.html

it's exactly that, it takes the files that came with the original game and runs them in an updated game engine allowing compatibility with modern computers!

so my question is what are people's thoughts on this, any fond memories of the original game?, maybe you've heard of it but never had the chance to play it.

well feel free to discuss it here!

  The Bug Reports Thread
Posted by: Darth-Apple - 03-11-2021, 04:34 AM - Forum: Announcements & Info - No Replies

Hello all,

We've just run some updates on our forum software to do routine security patches. This time around, we had to push them fairly quickly due to the nature of these patches. As a result, there might be some issues that we encounter.

This gives us a chance to officially start a bug reports thread for any issues that come up. If you see any issues (either from this update or from a future one), let us know here, and we will address them promptly!

  How Lockpicking works.
Posted by: SpookyZalost - 03-04-2021, 10:53 PM - Forum: Misc. - No Replies

So Lockpicking in concept is simple, in fact the basic design of a standard keylock hasn't changed in centuries, only gotten more complex.

I recently learned to pick basic locks and it does occasionally come in handy when a friend or family member locks themselves out of their house, their shed, or in my case, finding an old box without a key but with a lock.

there's a few things you need to know before you start lockpicking

the first is that locks are very simple, you have the core which rotates to unlock the door.
you have the pins which slide into the core and act similar to a deadbolt on a door preventing it from turning, what lock pickers call binding.
and you have the key which pushes these pins out of the core allowing it to rotate.

now the sharp eyed among you might notice the pins are actually in two pieces.

this is because the pin stays both in the core and the lock mechanism separating at the core's rotation point.

Now that the basics are out of the way, the art of lock picking is really an art form rather than just a skill, it takes finesse and is done more by feel than anything else.

lock picking is done in two steps.

the first is using the tensioner bar.

this is usually a small piece of metal which you apply a very light tension to and place in the bottom of the keyway (where the key goes).
when you successfully set all the pins this is what turns the lock open.

the second is the lock pick it's self.

this has exactly one job, to reach into the keyway and push the pins up as the tension bar turns the core slightly thus setting them into the same state as when a key is in the lock preventing them from coming down.

if you put too much tension on the lock, the pins won't move, put too little and they won't set.

here is a transparent practice lock, it allows you to see what's going on until you get the feel for picking them since you normally can't see what's going on inside.

and that's basically how lock picking works, you're just setting the pins one by one until the lock either opens or binds forcing you to reset it.

there are other methods but this is the basic theory and one that has worked since people have been picking locks ages ago.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible with what you do with this knowledge, lock picking is legal in just about every state in the US but having lockpicks on your person without a valid reason is considered possessing burglary tools so I wouldn't carry them around with you in case you get searched.

always if you're opening somebody's door, have them sign a waver legally giving you permission to do so.

if you live in virginia you need a license to posses lock picking tools.

I do not know what the laws are in other countries but make sure you read up on what your local laws and ordinances are.

and as always, have fun with it!

Hacker attacks water supply in florida
Posted by: SpookyZalost - 02-10-2021, 09:06 PM - Forum: Current Events - Replies (2)

so I found out this happened recently...

https://www.wired.com/story/oldsmar-flor...lity-hack/

basically what happened is that in the town of oldsmar florida a hacker managed to break into the water treatment plant and gain access to the water treatment chemical regulation system before forcing it to start dumping the treatment chemical, in this case lye, into the water in large quantities.

luckily a plant worker actually caught it pretty quickly but this could have been VERY serious had it not been caught early.

kudos to the worker at the treatment plant for catching it.

personally though I think this wasn't done by a lone hacker or independent hacker group.

There's a kind of unwritten code among hackers that you don't really do things to actively maim or kill somebody, partly because of the notoriety but also because there are some morals there.

Attack a corporation? sure, they probably are being jerks and making people's lives miserable anyway.

Hack into a network to see what it's structured like (or in the old days explore the phone networks), not that big a deal unless you're a corp and you think it affects your bottom line (fun fact, it didn't make a dent in their real profits!).

heck even viruses and spam aren't actively trying to kill or maim somebody...

in fact the only times infrastructure has been attacked via cyber attack have been either accidental or via nationally funded hacker groups run as government agencies.

the most notable being the steam pipe bursts under moscow in the 80's, the stuxnet attack on iran's uranium refineries, and of course the east coast blackout during the late 90's early 2000's.

so this would be more in line with another nationality or a terrorist group than a lone hacker.

but that's my thoughts on the matter what do you guys think happened?

  Simcity 2000 3D Render program
Posted by: SpookyZalost - 02-07-2021, 12:13 AM - Forum: SimCity - No Replies

So I just stumbled across this...

Basically it's a program which takes the map files from simcity 2000 and rendering them into a 3D model of that city.

The guy who wrote this is Aleksander Krimsky, better known for making modern engine updates to both streets of simcity and simcopter.

and yeah, it's just sorta cool to take that city you made back in simcity 2000 and viewing it in 3D, able to zoom in on stuff what whatnot.

check it out, it's free, like in air.

  Cities skylines 2?
Posted by: SpookyZalost - 02-06-2021, 09:03 PM - Forum: Cities: Skylines - Replies (5)

so it's been more than 5 years since cities skylines came out, they've released 9 expansion packs and several DLC's including extra music, stylistic changes, and entire building sets. in a similar vein to the sims series of games.

over that time their release schedule has been pretty regular until recently.

now whether that's because of the pandemic or not there's a lot of speculation that this might be the lead up to the much anticipated sequel.

not much info is available at this time however it doesn't hurt to discuss the possibility, so what do you guys think?
